Passion for Olive Oil
Our History
The area of present-day western Achaia, in which Alissos is located, has been inhabited since prehistoric times: stone tools, Neolithic elements, as well as Mycenaean cemeteries have been found throughout the region, which attest to the existence of settlements, and therefore of cultivation!
Specifically for the area where Alissos is located, there is evidence that at the site of Kamenitsa — which belongs to the local community of Alissos — Roman archaeological remains have been identified and it is believed that a public road passed through there during the Roman period! This indicates economic/agricultural activity and connections with other areas.
As in the entire wider region, olive cultivation in Alissos has existed for centuries! There is also a reference to an “ancient olive tree” in the coastal settlement of Kato Alissos, over 1,100 years old according to local legend!
Our Land
Our olive trees have been growing for many years in soils with a high percentage of clay and a low percentage of sand (clay, clay loam, clayey structure, which is ideal for olive cultivation). This ensures that the trees have sufficient moisture throughout the year despite the changes that may arise from rainfall. Thus, even in periods of dry weather, which is necessary for flowering, pollination and fruit set, our mature trees with their deep root system have an adequate water supply, which in turn helps them to ensure production without environmental stress. Organic Matter, i.e. the living part of the soil with its billions of beneficial microorganisms, is found at unusually high rates, reaching 3.5%!
To understand the enormous size of this value, we can say that a typical intensively farmed soil with zero Organic Matter, to reach this level, must be added per hectare at a depth of 60 centimeters, 100 cubic meters of goat and sheep manure. (1000 sq.m. x 0.6m = 600 cubic meters of soil = 800 tons of soil x3% = 24 tons of organic matter = 100 cubic meters of manure)
This indicates that the management of the soil to date has been done with respect for the environment, without unnecessary treatments and without fertilizers that destroy its organic components, ultimately degrading the quality of production.
These soils also have high levels of Calcium Carbonate which acts as a reserve for the available Calcium in the soil and thus our final product/olive oil is provided with high levels of Calcium.
The levels of Sodium are also impressive, which while in the usual soils of modern intensive agriculture are high, in our farms they are at zero percentages, making the nutritional value of our olive oil valuable, since it can be included in a “low Sodium” diet.
Furthermore, the peculiar morphology of the area allows the olive trees to be “ventilated” sufficiently throughout the year, with beneficial effects on the fruit produced.
Ahaeanland
Based on the above, it is easily understood that people who were born and raised in the area carry in their DNA a primordial passion for olive oil! For a unique, incomparable quality olive oil! This passion was what led to the creation of Ahaean Land!!! And of course the result, with the international distinctions it constantly wins, has fully justified the originators of the idea!
